Reclaim the Streets - Keep Newtown Weird

This totally free multi stage community festival celebrates vibrant local creativity and difference in the face of gentrification, hate and boredom.

When our streets and neighbourhood meeting places are treated merely as transit routes for cars or profit opportunities for the wealthy, public life disappears and we feel less safe.

A big, loud, freaky street party strengthens our diverse and unique community, reinforces Newtown’s reputation for acceptance and makes our neighbourhood safer for everyone. Reconnect with your neighbours, dance in your streets, cover them in art, make it noisy, messy and bright.

DJs spun House, Hip Hop, Psytrance, Hardcore and a bunch of other genres over multiple mobile sound systems (lineups below). Participants prepared their most fabulous, outrageous, breath-taking outfits, for the fashion parade!

We celebrated our right to dress however we like, with prizes to the most innovative and fantastic outfits including:

This year we also made a pilgrimage to the Saint George mural to chalk messages of love. Our free mobile protest festival of weirdness & queerness met outside The Hub at 2pm on Sunday 22rd of April and headed down King Street soon after. It didn’t matter what you wore, as long as you are there.
